How To Get Your License to Become an HVAC Contractor

Similar to many other trades, a professional apprenticeship, an applicable license and certification are required to be an HVAC contractor, depending on the state you reside in. It is customary to complete an exam and have a number of years of work as a responsible apprentice in the field before obtaining a license. This is standard protocol across the industry. In addition, technicians with specialized tasks such as handling hazardous materials must be certified through the EPA. Certification for handling pressurized appliances can require additional certification. These certificates are administered through sanctioned institutions and organizations, and will cover safety and correct handling procedures according to code. These specialized licenses are typically or good for the duration of your career.
