What Does a Basketball Coach Do?

A basketball instructor coaches players at practice and during games. They are also responsible for designing plays and strategies for their team to improve overall gameplay. Along with the plays comes the need to create drills and practices suited to the team’s success. A basketball instructor must also study and be knowledgeable of the basketball league regulations and any changes made at any point.

A basketball instructor must teach the 6 foundational techniques:

  • Dribbling.
  • Passing.
  • Shooting.
  • Rebounding.
  • Defense.

An excellent basketball instructor will provide each player with equal attention, regardless of their skill level and give the support needed by players because one of the most important things coaches can do is build everyone on the team’s self-esteem. Keep comments constructive and fair. Training for players is at all levels so that an instructor may coach small children just beginning the sport, a college team, or NBA-bound players.

How Much Does a Basketball Coach Make?

Annually, the average basketball instructor in the United State makes about $43,679. This will vary from state to city, to skill level of the team they are instructing.
