There are no strict formal educational requirements for this profession. However, most prospective employers prefer a candidate with a GED or high school diploma equivalent. An apprenticeship program is standard, with a time investment of about 6-10 weeks. The skills covered usually include haircutting, nail clipping, bathing, all while being supervised by a professional groomer. A prospective groomer may seek training at one of the 50 state-approved grooming schools. These schools offer programs that last between 2-18 weeks. Ambitious groomers can earn certificates provided by The National Dog Groomers Association of America or International Professional Groomers Inc. You can get a Master Groomer designation through either of these resources.
