Certification Programs and Training for Dog and Pet Boarding

Similar to a dog sitter, there is no formal education or training required to be a dog boarder. However, some business training is highly recommended, as well as industry knowledge, managerial skills and understanding of insurance, hygiene and safety protocols. Many dog boarders will have started in other jobs working with dogs. They may have worked for a veterinarian, a groomer, breeders, or as a dog sitter or dog walker. Having your own personal experience with dogs and ownership of dogs and other pets can be a great asset. Otherwise finding work at a good kennel is a great start. You may be able to find an apprenticeship program in this industry from one of the reliable groups and associations listed below.
